7 Disturbing Things To Know About Being Black In Modern Day Egypt!!
Black Egyptians experience racism daily.
In their article, “Being black in Egypt,” Imogen Lambert and Nada Ramadan, two writers for al-Araby al-Jadeed, convey that those of the Black community in Egypt are deemed “inferior [minorities], subjecting them to varying degrees of racial discrimination and degrading treatment.” Furthermore, another article published by Aljazeera declares that there is “long-standing racism that threatens the security and livelihoods of Egypt’s [sizable] sub-Saharan population.”
Racial discrimination is not criminalized in Egypt.
Very little is done to take a legal stance against the discrimination that Black Egyptians are subject to on a daily basis. In fact, Lambert and Ramadan state the following when discussing the legality of racial discrimination: “The Egyptian constitution prohibits any form of discrimination, including based on skin color. However, the law does not [criminalize] racial discrimination. If you were subjected to racist treatment, the best you can do is attempt to press charges of libel or slander.”
Racial slurs are commonly directed towards Black people in public places.
The terms “chocalata” and “samara” are often used to refer to those of the Black community in Egypt. However, according to the article, term “zarboon,” meaning slave, is also commonly used
Black women are often treated as if they are promiscuous.
Black Egyptian women are often treated as inferior concubines. In fact, a 2013 governmental survey determined that 99.3 percent of Egyptian women have been sexually assaulted at one time or another. According to the al-Araby al-Jadeedarticle, Fatma Ali, a Sudanese writer, confirms that the treatment of Black women is “especially bad due to perceptions of ‘easiness’.” She bluntly states the following: “It goes without saying that they believe all [Black] girls are naturally prostitutes.”
Colorism is openly practiced and, for most part, upheld.
Lambert and Ramadan write that “the degree of racism that [Black] people in Egypt are exposed to often depends on how dark their skin is.” Moreover, in his essay, “The ‘Black Pharaohs’ Fallacy: Misinterpretations of Kush-Kemet Identity,” Tristan Samuels delves into the reality of “intraracial colorism.” He describes it as “hierarchy within a racial group based on skin color.” This notion, no doubt, influences modern-day Egypt. It is for this reason that Abdel Rahman Sherif said the following when interviewed by Lambert and Ramadan: “Black Egyptians are subjected to less racial discrimination than [Sub-Saharan] African immigrants are. Racist Egyptians [try to] tell the difference based on the facial features and the varying shades of skin color.”
Black Egyptians are often subject to police brutality.
As mentioned before, Black Egyptians receive little protection. This reality is also evident in regards to law enforcement. In fact, police officers are often the individuals responsible for inflicting the harm that the Black Egyptian community is forced to encounter. Sherif states,”African victims of racial discrimination in Egypt do not report the violations against them because they know there is no one to protect them. They escape in fear when they see cameras.”
Egyptian media portrays Black people as inferior.
According to the al-Araby al-Jadeed article, “representation of black people in cinema and other media has often historically been either marginal or racist.” Black men are always casted as doormen, cooks, servants, and drivers, while Black women often play the maid or the nanny. Even the Egyptian news media criminalizes the Black community. For instance, the article expresses that an Egyptian newspaper openly accused “’n****rs’ and ‘the [Black] terror gangs in Cairo’ of committing most crimes against activists and journalists.”
Black refugees are second-class citizens.
According to a 2013 article released by Aljazeera, “non-Arab,” or Black, refugees are forced to overcome “much more serious problems.” This is due to the fact that, in many cases, “most refugees in Egypt must remain in the country without identification or any means of subsistence for at least three years.” As a result, “they are forced into the dark economy, working illegally at cafes, on construction sites, and in other manual jobs where abuse is routine and they have little protection in law.” These Black refugees are not guaranteed an education, healthcare, legal protection, or employment. They are ultimately considered to be second-class citizens.
African-American Man, Ricky Jackson Gets $2 Million After Being Wrongly Convicted For Nearly 40 Years
Ricky Jackson is an African-American man who spent nearly 40 years behind bars in Ohio for a murder he did not commit.
On the discovery of his innocence, he was awarded $2 million from the state for his wrongful imprisonment. A witness had falsely testified against him.
This will not be the first time a black American was lied against in the court house.
A United States report released in April, says that one in every 25 death row inmates in the United States is innocent.
Together with his friend Wiley Bridgeman, Rick Jackson was convicted for the murder of a businessman, Harry Franks on May 19, 1975. Both had served 40 long years in prison paying for a crime they were innocent of.
The 13 year old witness back then in 1975 has retracted his testimony. Report says that the now 53-year old man, Eddie Vernon, confessed to a minister who visited him at the hospital that the 2 black American men were innocent of the murder crime.Eddie says that he never even witnessed the crime. According to him he was pressured by the Police authorities to lie about the incident.
It is not a hidden fact that blacks in America are arrested more often than any other race. In the present time it has gone far beyond arrests of innocent black citizens.
Quite a good number of blacks in recent times have been gunned down by the American police for no clear cause to do so.
Not many people will be as lucky as Ricky Jackson and Wiley Bridgeman. Their exoneration is proof that there is still justice in the world no matter how long it takes.
The Ohio Innocence Project, which took up Ricky and Wiley’s case, is grateful that the duo were finally set free. The Innocence project says that both men were the longest-serving exonerees in US history.
$2 million may never take away the pain of the years but the innocent man expressed his gratitude for it anyway.
16 Year Old, Black Teen Shoots Retired Police Dog, Gets 23 Years In Jail!!
Granted. No one should be breaking into anyone’s home or shooting and killing dogs, but 23 years in prison seems a bit excessive. However, this is the sentence for the crimes committed by a young black male in the state of Florida recently. In the wake of police killing of unarmed, teen Michael Brown where the officer has yet to be charged and the release of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin, many people are puzzled by this.
At the age of 16, Ivins Rosier broke into a home owned by Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody in West Palm Beach, Florida. He shot and killed a 5 year old German Shephered, who was a retired police dog. The detective and prosecutor on the case argued the death of the dog was equivalent to the “murder of a law enforcement officer”, which seems not to be legally true.
Rosier was charged as an adult in the case, which carriers much heaftier prison sentences than if he was charged as a minor in the crime. Had he gotten charged as a minor, he would have been looking at a maximum sentence of 6 years and had a chance to turn his life around.
Charged as an adult, Rosier was convicted on three felony counts: cruelty to animals with a firearm, burglary of a dwelling with a firearm, and shooting into a building. This resulted in the sentencing of 23 years in prison.
“A gun in a 16-year-old’s hand can do equally the damage as a gun in an adult’s hand,” said the prosecuting attorney.”He’s not a child.”
Boody, the trooper and dog owner, cried during his testimony on the stand when discussing how he came home and saw his dog dead by gun shot wounds.
Our hearts go out to Boody for the lost of his pet. Having a beloved animal taking from you is no small matter at all. However, this young child who obviously shouldn’t have done what he did is having his chance at redemption taken from him with the sentencing.
It is hard for the black community not to feel the lives of animals are more valuable in the eyes of America then our children when cases like this, the police shooting of Michael Brown, John Crawford, the killing of Eric Gardner, and many more are constant reminders of this fact.
HORROR!!! Lady Turns To Snake During seks With Lover In Akwa Ibom…[More Photos]
It was a strange sight in Akwa Ibom state when a woman allegedly turned into a snake during $ ex with her lover in a hotel. According to Chris Udoh, a journalist in the state, the duo were already having $ ex inside a hotel room in Eket, Akwa Ibom, when the shocking occurrence happened.
According to what he reported, the middle-aged man had taken the lady he met along the road in the town, to a hotel to have $ ex:’ with her in the hotel but he got the shock of his life when the woman allegedly turned into a mammoth reptile. Read the story below: “The incident took place on Friday when the man took the lady to a three Star hotel in Eket metropolis (name of hotel withheld). ”After having few bottles of drinks, the couple retired to their room. While in there, the man said he observed that she took so much time in the rest room which warranted him to knock on the door frequently, but she kept answering that she will soon be through.
According to the man, when she finally came out, she told him not to touch her head while they made love, telling him that she had a severe headache and suggested that the red wine may have caused it. ”The man said that when they started having $ ex the lady started wriggling her body on the bed like a snake but he admitted that he didn’t give serious thought to it ‘as he was enjoying the action. The man who is in his mid-forties, said as soon as he had his 0rg asm and got up from her body, he noticed that her entire body was fast changing to a snake. He said he was overwhelmed by fear and jumped out of the room na ked and raised an alarm which attracted both the hotel managers and others patrons to rush to his room. When the management of the hotel made their way into the room, the lady was still half snake and half human, wriggling on the bed, but the hotel manager quickly rushed out to inform the police.
Prophet challenge lions to prove power of god - gets mauled, ranger saves him before get killed
Prophet Alec Ndiwane who is based in the Pretoria Soshanguve was with fellow church members in the Kruger National Park where they were watching animals.It is believed the prophet went into a trance and started to speak in tongues. Ahead of them was a lion pride busy eating their impala.
Alec must have thought he was the biblical Samson as the prophet opened the car door and went charging towards the lions. Upon seeing the man running towards them, the lions could not believed that manna was coming straight from heaven and instead ran towards the prophet.
Alec must have then come to his senses as he quickly realised this was not going to end well and made an immediate turn and ran back to safety. But before he could safely reach the confines of the car, one lion had snapped its paws on him thus causing major damage to his toilet sitting tool. Also thanks to the game ranger who was near who fired some shots with his gun to scare the lion away.
So severe was the lion paw injury that Alec had to be rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. The man was fearing he would lose his bum but the doctor’s assured him he would still have his left bum intact.
“I do not know what came over me’, Alec confessed, ‘I thought the Lord wanted to use me to show his power over animals. Is it not we were given dominion over all creatures of the earth’, Alec added.
Alec was eventually stitched up and discharged after spending the night in hospital.
Two female Prophets sued after batter and bruise a Teen
A teenage girl was allegedly beaten, throttled and knocked unconscious by two female church “prophets” trying to rid her of “demons”.
The girl’s family from Amalinda, in East London are furious over the incident involving their 13-year-old daughter and the two leaders from the Love of God Church in Daza location in Tsomo.
Unathi Zwakala, who stays with her grandmother in the town, said she regularly attended the church.
Unathi said she was sitting in the congregation last Monday when she and another person were called to the front to be prayed for.
Unathi said they were made to sit on chairs with one woman standing in front of her and another behind her. They then started praying over her.
She said the women shook her to the point where she could no longer take it.
“It was painful, so I tried to stand up and move back, and that is when they pushed me to the floor, held me down and started beating me,” she said.
The teen said that when she screamed, one of the women – who had her knees on the girl’s chest – started to strangle her and hit her head against the floor.
“I cried and begged them to stop. I even said the demons were gone thinking they would let me go, but they continued and no one came to stop them.”
Unathi said the two women continued to hit her until she lost consciousness. When she came to, the service was over and the congregation had left.
“I forced myself to get up, but my body was in pain and I could not walk. My nose was bleeding and my head pounding.
“The ladies who I had gone to church with carried me home.”
The teen’s mother, Gcotyelwa Zwakala, said she received a message from her daughter requesting that she call her immediately.
Zwakala said she travelled to Tsomo the following morning.
“I was so shocked to see my daughter so badly bruised. Churches are supposed to protect their members, not hurt them.”
Zwakala took her daughter to a doctor for treatment.
She also contacted pastor Phila Ndabula from the church, who apologised saying nothing like that had ever happened in the church before.
Zwakala requested that Ndabula arrange a meeting with the two women who allegedly beat up Unathi, but he allegedly refused.
She then tried to get hold of the women and managed to speak to one who was “rude and cheeky”.
The other allegedly apologised over the phone and agreed to meet with the family but never arrived for the meeting.
Zwakala said she had initially feared that reporting the matter to police would not lead anywhere, but was reconsidering her decision as she wanted the two women to be held accountable for what they had done.
Contacted for comment, Ndabula told the Dispatch he was aware of the incident as he was in church the day it took place.
He said the two “prophets” worked under him and were praying for the teenager at the time.
“We always pray for people at church, this is not a new practice.
“Her [Unathi’s] eye was only swollen because she was rolling around and might have injured herself then.
“The only mistake the prophets made was to hold her hands, but this was because she was rolling around “fighting the demons” and they had to hold her down.”
The Dispatch attempted to get hold of the two women but was unsuccessful at the time of writing.
Unathi’s class teacher Cikizwa Magaga confirmed the teen had turned up at school in a “very bad state” after the incident.
Magaga said Unathi had been battling to concentrate since the incident and out of concern the school had let her go home as she had completed most of her exams.
Reverend Lulama Ntshingwa, of the South African Council of Churches, condemned acts of violence against people, as well as abuse of power in churches.
He urged the family to report the matter to the police.
Earth Tremor attack Guateng for another time
The quake‚ which was initially measured at between 6.3 and 6.5 on the Richter Scale‚ struck just before 8pm‚ about 250km away from the capital Gaborone.
It was felt across Limpopo‚ Mpumalanga‚ North West and large parts of Gauteng‚ shaking buildings. Suburbs in Johannesburg where the tremor was felt included Illovo‚ Rosebank‚ Centurion‚ Roodepoort‚ Boksburg and Pretoria.
TMG Digital reported that an earth tremor measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale had occurred earlier in the day in Krugersdorp on the West Rand of Gauteng in the mining town of Stilfontein. That epicentre was 2km underground.
Ian Saunders‚ a seismologist at the Council for Geoscience‚ said Monday evening’s quake was a “serious” one.
“That is a big magnitude. We are currently assembling teams to be dispatched to Botswana. There are already teams heading to the earthquake zone from earlier in the day.”
